Big Bend is a National Park, bordering Mexico and has national significance as the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert in the US. It has many geological features including dinosaur bones and sea fossils. The Rio Grande, a not so big river as the name would suggest, forms the boundary between Mexico and the US. Several rivers carved temple-like canyons in the ancient limestone. Look at the beauty of Big Bend with Three on the Road…
We unfortunately have chosen Spring Break to come to Big Bend. This is why all campgrounds were full, and we camped at Alpine and drove into Big Bend daily (around 1 hours drive one way).. that’s how secluded Big Bend is.
Chisos Basin ” The Window”
On the Lost Mine Trail, a hike up in the Chisos Mountains: Beware of Bears and Lions
Driving further around Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive:
Rio Grande, a green belt in the desert. And a natural wall behind as border to Mexico.
Santa Elena Canyon: A wonderful hike into the Canyon up to the end, where you may only walk further through the water
Old Maverick Road: 4×4 recommended
.. and with our car in the sunset shadow.. we say good-bye to Big Bend National Park in the evening.

The different different topographies are very interesting–living in the high desert, we do not see all of those differences, until we travel to the Grand Canyon. Texas has it all !
