From Delaware to Virginia we again needed to cross the Chesapeake Bay, this time with the lower Cheasapeake Bay Brigde-Tunnel. Yes: Bridge-Tunnel! We had no idea what that means.. but first, we had to wait to find out. High winds.. this means, all vehicles with trailers and all trucks need to wait on a parking lot before the winds calm down, so that they are allowed to cross. The parking lot was already filled up when we arrived in the afternoon with people waiting there since three o’clock in the morning! So we parked our RV there too and had lots of time to study the construction of this bridge AND tunnel in one:
Our wonderful parking lot to wait for the winds to die..:
Astonishingly, just next to the parking lot was a most amazing little hike through beautiful marshland. So instead of waiting in the parking lot, we had a nice walk with Eyra and tried to do the best with our waiting time:
And then, a horn and police men who informed, that winds are still high, but good enough to go and we drove over the bridge which on two parts sank into a tunnel, that the big container ships could pass over you and then, you came out of the thunnel again and continued on the bridge. Fascinating..
Several container ships seemed to wait for their turn to be able to cross “over” the bridge-tunnel:
and we just witnessed one going through, just before we dived into the tunnel. A strange feeling, as you do not see the tunnel from far away and you just have the feeling, that this ship races into the bridge you drive on!
Enough from the bridge 🙈
On the other side of it is the summer holiday town Virginia Beach. Nice beach with a huge beach promenade, but much too touristy and “cool” for us. We already started to miss the beautiful English-style houses.

We mostly stayed in the state park “First Landing S.P.“, just next to Virginia Beach and enjoyed the wonderful scenery there, the dog friendly beach and the amazingly mystical cypress tree marshes:
search for the little crab… not easy to spot
And we are having a very interesting time in the US, as there is midterm election and people are going to vote today on November 6. This means tons of election campaigns everywhere on the radio, parties, discussions, street signs etc. There’s a lot going on.. an interesting time.
